Doric Wilson

Doric Wilson was the first resident playwright at NYC's legendary Caffe Cino, his comedy And He Made A Her, opening there in 1961. The success of his play helped, in the words of playwright Robert Patrick, "establish the Cino as a venue for new plays, and materially contributed to the then-emerging concept of off-off Broadway."

A participant in all three nights of the Stonewall Riots (1969) he became active in the early days of the Gay Liberation movement. 1974, He formed TOSOS, the first professional theatre company to deal openly and honestly with the gay experience. TOSOS and his play The West Street Gang are featured in "Perform," the permanent exhibit on theatre at The Museum of New York City. In 2001, he resurrected the company with Mark Finley and Barry Childs as TOSOS II.

In 1994 Doric Wilson won the first Robert Chesley Award for Lifetime Achievement and in 2007 was the 3rd recipient of the IT Award for Artistic Achievement. Critic Tish Dace describes him as "a quintessentially urban dramatist... (who) specializes in stylish farce, ironic comedy of wit, and urbane satire... his combination of fantasy and whimsy and his intellectual dialectic suggests the touch of a Giraudoux or a Shaw... yet underlying his often caustic comedy is surprisingly romantic sensibility."

His plays quickly became staples of the emerging Gay Theater circuit, and are still widely performed here and abroad.

A selection of his plays are available for free download from doricwilson.com. He is published by United Stages.
